study defines “end-of-life support” as carrying out the\nnecessary business of the dying, such as medical care, nursing care, funeral,\nand burial and aimed to make an international comparison of institutions and\npolicies for “end-of-life support” and to clarify the direction of institutions and\npolicies for “end-of-life support” in a super-aged and death-burdened society.\nThe results of the review of institutions and policies concerning “endof-\nlife support” show that in other countries, support and services for\nindividuals facing death and their families are clearly defined, legislated,\nand institutionalized, but in Japan, discussions and deliberations have not\nprogressed, and support and services are not fully in place.\nIn a super-aged and death-burdened society, there is a need for institutions\nand services that support senior citizens to self-determination and respect the\nwishes in “end-of-life support,” institutions and services that directly support\nfamilies who provide “end-of-life support,” and “institutions and policies\nthat can directly support senior citizens, families, and others, seamlessly and\nwithout interruption before and after death,” which encompass
