In this paper, based on interviews with hearingimpaired users, we clarify what users seek from a telephone and discuss the roles they expect communication assistants to play in the provision of the same service. We also aim to help in the reconsideration of existing face-toface interpreting services, which is a combination of the role of interpreter and interpersonal support. Users look for immediacy and reliable communication from telephones, and from the interpreter, they look for interpreting skills at a level where communication proceeds smoothly. In other words, the most important thing is to establish a smooth interaction with a remote listener. In the realization of this, paraphrasing, substitution, and the addition of paralinguistic information according to the level of understanding of both parties were very well perceived.
